The rebadged former Lotus team has not yet reached the level that founder and airline impresario Tony Fernandes envisaged when it entered in 2010 although it has always been the best of the new entrants. Three years down and the team is yet to earn a point and has been unable to join the mid-ranking teams and consistently challenge to make it into Q2 on Saturdays. Bringing in youngsters Charles Pic from Marussia and rookie Giedo van der Garde to replace the more seasoned Heikki Kovalainen and Vitaly Petrov is not going to make progress any easier for the team. For 2013, Caterham will continue to be powered by Renault engines, a partnership that began in 2011, with the gearbox, hydraulic systems package and KERS supplied by Red Bull Technology. The team is the F1 arm of Caterham Group but traces its roots back to 2010 when it was then known as Lotus Racing. It was based in Hingham, Norfolk, near the original home of Team Lotus. Its performance gave it Column One status in F1 which brings an enhanced share of the sport's revenue and provided an important financial platform for the team's future expansion.
